Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom teeth extraction is a dental procedure aimed at removing the third molars, also known as wisdom teeth, from the back of the mouth. These molars are the last teeth to emerge, typically appearing between the ages of 17 and 25. While some individuals experience no issues with their wisdom teeth, others may encounter complications that necessitate extraction, these reasons include:

1. IMPACTION – Wisdom teeth can become impacted if there is insufficient space in the mouth for them to erupt properly. Impacted wisdom teeth remain partially or fully trapped beneath the gumline, causing discomfort, pain, and potential damage to adjacent teeth.

2. INFECTIONS AND GUMS DISEASE – Partially erupted wisdom teeth can create pockets between the gums and the teeth, making them prone to bacterial growth and infections. This can lead to gum inflammation, known as pericoronitis.

3. TOOTH DECAY – due to their location at the back of the mouth and the challenges in cleaning them properly, wisdom teeth are more susceptible to tooth decay and cavities.

4. CYSTS AND TUMOURS – In some cases, cysts or tumors may develop around impacted wisdom teeth, potentially causing damage to the jawbone and nearby teeth.

While it may seem daunting, early evaluation and timely extraction can help prevent potential complications and contribute to your overall oral well-being. By removing impacted or problematic wisdom teeth, patients can avoid discomfort, prevent dental issues, and maintain oral health.
